Societa Agricola Chia Castello Romitorio
Castello Romitorio is a historic Tuscan winery located near Montalcino, housed in a striking 12th-century fortress once abandoned after World War II. The estate was revived in 1984 when celebrated artist Sandro Chia purchased it and replanted vineyards with Sangiovese, the cornerstone of Brunello di Montalcino wines. Combining his artistic vision with oenological passion, Chia transformed the castle into both a winery and an art space, adorning it with his paintings and sculptures inspired by the Italian Transavanguardia movement.
Under the stewardship of Sandro’s son, Filippo Chia, who joined in 2005, the estate underwent major renewal, including a modern cellar and expanded plantings across altitudes ranging from 200 to 400 meters. The vineyards, totaling over 40 acres in Montalcino and additional plots in Maremma, are cultivated organically and sustainably to highlight the terroir’s purity.
Today, Castello Romitorio is acclaimed for its refined Sangiovese-based wines—particularly its Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino, and the single-vineyard Filo di Seta—renowned for elegance, depth, and artistic identity. The estate exemplifies a seamless blend of art, heritage, and viticultural mastery in the heart of Tuscany
